Maple Lake Retreat Centre is pleased to introduce Wellness Retreats for Seniors, created for older adults who may be feeling lonely or isolated.During each 3-day retreat, participants stay at the scenic Maple Lake Retreat Centre in the Haliburton Highlands where they receive superior quality, healthy and fun programs designed especially for seniors.
Participants take part in daily exercise classes such as Yoga, Tai Chi and Breath & Peace Meditation, Bend & Stretch exercises, aqua fitness and nature hikes. Our expert teachers and instructors provide sessions in computer skills, gardening, baking, cooking, art and music. Throughout the retreat, participants receive ample opportunities to socialize, meet new friends and learn something new in a warm and welcoming environment.
One of the greatest benefits of day of our programs is the community-based setting which promotes socialization among seniors. Participants get the opportunity to interact, reminisce and meet new friends. Each day at the retreat is a special experience consisting of nature walks, exercise classes, arts and crafts, table and card games, mental stimulation, educational session, special parties and celebrations. The Retreat also offers regularly scheduled field trips to picnic areas, parks, museums, historical places, area attractions, bowling alleys and movie theatres. These well-supervised trips are not only fun, but trigger memories and promote socialization. All activities are created to fit the physical abilities of participants in order to ensure each senior is included and able to partake in all activities.
Positive outcomes for Participants
In addition to increased socialization, other positive outcomes for participants include improved moods, a greater sense of purpose in life, better sleep habits, greater independence and increased motivation.
Caregiving can be extremely stressful and could also put the caregiver’s health at risk. The use of our services can be significantly effective in alleviating care-related stress. The retreat offers an opportunity for caregivers to better manage family, enjoy responsibilities as well as a chance to relax and take part in their own social and recreational activities.
We are currently accepting participants for the 2019 summer season. Grants are available for low-income seniors to cover 100% of participation costs. To book an appointment for an assessment or if you know someone who you think may benefit from this program, please call us at (416) 910-0030.
“Being an immigrant, I found it hard to meet people and connect which led me to staying at home for days on end. I became isolated and felt very depressed. Attending this retreat was life changing for me, I felt as though I am part of a family and met so many other immigrant seniors who became my friends. I feel rejuvenated and excited to utilize the new skills I learnt, thank you for this opportunity! Elijah G., Summer 2016”
“The yoga I learned was so reviving and I have been practicing it for over 2 years now. I am so happy to share that it has improved my health and well-being, I am now sleeping better and look forward to improving every day.” Sharon B., Summer 2015”
“It was an eye-opening experience to see and learn about the Canadian wilderness, I would have never been able to experience it if not for this retreat. Each year, I wait eagerly for summer so I may participate again!” Suzanna S., Summer 2015”
